You do not need a nursing license, CNA certification, medical degree, or formal caregiving classes (not even CPR, etc) to be paid under Virginia's Medicaid in-home care program.
Most paid caregivers are family members or friends who are already helping someone at home.
What Is Required?
To be paid as a caregiver in Virginia, you must:
- Be at least 18 years old
- Pass a background check
- Be able to safely provide the approved care
What Type of Care Are You Paid For?
You are paid for non-medical daily assistance tasks. Things you already do on a daily basis, such as:
- Bathing
- Dressing
- Personal hygiene
- Moving safely from one room to another
- Meal preparation
- Light household tasks related to care
You are not expected to perform skilled medical procedures.
What Types of Guidance Will You Receive?
After approval, you will receive instructions on how to:
- Record your hours
- Submit timesheets
- Follow program rules
What If You Have a Criminal Record?
You must pass a background check.
Certain convictions may prevent approval. Each case is reviewed individually.
