Can You Really Get Paid to Care for Family or Friends in Virginia?
Yes. Virginia Medicaid's CCC Plus Waiver allows any adult to be a paid caregiver for someone receiving in-home care. This is not a loophole or a special exception. It is a built-in feature of the program called Consumer-Directed care.
Who Can Be a Paid Caregiver
To be paid as a caregiver under the CCC Plus Waiver, a person must:
- Be 18 years of age or older
- Pass a background check
Be able to perform the basic care tasks listed in the care plan. You can be paid to take care of parents, grandparents, siblings, friends, or neighbors, even a spouse (though there are some special stipulations for spouses).

Can a Parent Be Paid to Care for a Child?
Yes, a parent can be paid to care for a child who qualifies for the CCC Plus Waiver. However, because the child cannot serve as their own Employer of Record, a separate adult representative must take on that role. (An EOR can never manage themself since that would be a conflict of interest).
Is This Legitimate?
Yes. Consumer-Directed care is a formal Medicaid program authorized by the federal government and administered by the state of Virginia. Caregivers are W-2 employees. Pay is processed through a state-approved payroll company.
